How to Grow Vegetables Indoors

A lot of people who don’t have an outdoor space give up on the idea of having a garden because they think that it isn’t possible, but people grow indoor vegetable gardens all the time.

Just like everything, it comes with some challenges but it is possible. Here is how and what vegetables you can grow indoors

How to Prepare

If you are on a tight budget but want to have your own vegetables, all you need to do is fill any container with a hole in the bottom and fill it with dirt.

But if your budget is not that thing you can purchase proper kits and pots that will make you have an amazing indoor vertical garden

If you want to do it properly you will want to add gravel at the bottom of the pot to encode drainage.

If you don’t have any gravel around you can smash any old ceramic mugs or plates, actual rocks or small bits of concrete.

Make sure that there is always something underneath the pots so the water doesn’t leak all over the place.

Always pick the right and good-quality soil so your vegetables have the best conditions to grow in.

Best Vegetables to Start With

  • Celery

If you want to plant your celery from the seed it will take approximately 120 days to harvest it, but there are some ways to speed up the process without using bad fertilisers and not organic seeds.

The best way to plant your celery is to cut the base of the celery bunch and let it sit in water for up to seven days until you can see roots sprouting from the base.

Celery is really easy to grow. All you need to do is water it daily but not drown it and keep it in a sunny spot.

  • Potatoes

We all have one sprouty potato in the drawer, so there is really no need to go get potato sprouts from the store if you are good with the type of potato that you already have.

You will need to cut a spotty potato into small chunks so there are about three sprouts in one piece. Lay them in soil, spout side up and bury them about four inches deep in the dirt.

You won’t need to add gravel for the potatoes. But the thing when you are panting potatoes it is that it’s not a fast process.

It will take anywhere from three weeks to two months for your potatoes to be ready depending on the type that you have picked. As the plant is growing taller you will need to add soil to cover it.

You can purchase potato-growing sacks that will make the whole harvesting process easier and cleaner.

You will know that your potatoes are ready to be harvested when the foliage will turn yellow.

When it turns yellow you will want to cut the plants and leave them be about ten days before harvesting your vegetables.

  • Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another vegetable that is really forgiving and easy to take care of.

A great plus is that there are so many smaller tomato varieties that you can choose to plant and all of them can thrive indoors.

Once you have found what type you would like to plant you will need to find a sunny spot where they will be able to grow.

Because there is nothing more displeasing than having to eat a pale flavourless tomato.

Because tomatoes are self-pollinating, if they aren’t doing their thing and aren’t sprouting all you will need to do is to tap the stamps of the open flowers to move the pollen around the whole plant.

  • Scallions

If you are interested in trying out to see how you will like having your own vegetable garden the best vegetable to start with are scallions.

All you will need to do is purchase some scallions and cut off the white ends and stick the roots into water.

You will need to change the water every few days and after about a week they will have roots and you can plant them into the soil.

After that, you will never need to buy scallions again. You will have your own tarsier and organic scallions to enjoy.

Now that you are growing your own vegetables you will also be starting to save money. But you will also reduce the amount of waste you are producing.

Having your own vegetable garden is not only rewarding but it is fun too. The longer you do it the more varieties of vegetables you will have in your little indoor garden.

There won’t be the need to wait for seasons to eat amazing fresh vegetables wherever your heart desires. And the best thing is that you are saving the environment by doing so.
