Gardening is a rewarding and relaxing hobby. While you may be out in the great outdoors or working in a crowded garden, if you’re asking yourself how to begin your own garden, these helpful yet simple tips will assist you on your journey.
However, if you watch carefully you should understand the right tools to use for your new gardening venture.
Pick a Location
If your new garden is to be built on a small piece of land, it is best to build your gardening area on a level surface such as gravel or concrete.
This allows you to work more evenly and reduces the chance of your plants taking root too low or too high.
Also, building your garden on concrete reduces your possibilities of soil erosion or rotting. If your ground is very rocky or sloping, consider building your garden over a smaller area.
Make a Plan
First things first – when starting your gardening project, plan ahead. You should make a list of your garden needs and what tools you will need to make your garden come to life.
You should have a good supply of seeds, water and fertilizers ready at your fingertips when you first begin planting your own garden.
It will also be wise to purchase some gardening supplies such as a shovel, spade and hoe and some tools that will assist with harvesting your plants.
If you choose to plant on a small piece of land, you will need to be sure that it is flat and level. A large piece of land may take several months to prepare to grow your vegetables and flowers.
Be patient in preparing your land for the planting of your new garden. When your land is prepared, take note of the directions in your gardening book and go over them one more time with a sharp object such as a pencil.
Once you have all of your instructions in hand, go out and dig your way to your garden plot, keeping in mind not to move heavy objects into your hole or you could cause a big mess.
In order to prepare your plot, lay down several inches of thick sand, making sure it does not get too wet or the roots of your garden plants can dry out.
Once you really get the hang of your garden, consider building a greenhouse in the future. There are plenty of greenhouse kits on the market, and lots of resources to get you started.
Start Small
The size of your garden plot should be dependent upon the space available in your yard. A plot larger than two feet by two feet will require a bigger plotter such as a shovel.
Once you have your plot prepared and leveled, dig down until you reach about two inches below the topsoil and fill in the hole with your seeds or fertilizer.
Now that your planting is under way, you should be able to enjoy your gardening experience with a smile and a feeling of accomplishment.
If there are no plants ready to be planted at this point, you will still need to water and mulch and feed your plants to ensure they have enough food to survive.
Remember to keep your plants well watered, fertilized, trimmed and mulched.
