The world of high fashion and brand-driven beauty can be quite the challenge for moms to wade through. A lot of styles and trends, while stunning, aren’t the best for a woman with a kids, a family and many things on her to-do list. Trust me, when you become a parent, you won’t always have time for a perfectly primed and prepped face, 45-minute makeup applications and clothes we have to fuss and fight to get into. Sometimes all we have in the morning are the 20 minutes between when we wake up and when our kids descend on us. Now that doesn’t mean we don’t have time to put on something cute, pop on some makeup and look good, it just means the products we use and wear have to be more suited to our lives.
It often feels like brands cater to the moms who have a lot of money, a lot of help and a lot of time to get themselves put together, but this just isn’t the story for many moms. One mom complained to me the other day, “It’s like beauty and fashion companies want me to choose between being a hyper trendy, glam celeb mommy or the boring, dull and style-challenged mom. There is just no in between.” Sadly, this is the way many moms feel. Becoming a mom doesn’t mean you stop wanting to enjoy fashion and beauty, and if brands were actually paying attention, they would realize there’s a market rich with savvy, empowered women who just need the right company hearing their voice. Here are a few things the beauty and fashion industries can do for mothers.
Realistic Portrayals of Fashion
One of the things that drives moms crazy, especially the pregnant ones, is the advertising that completely lies to the consumer. Did you know that a lot of maternity wear brands actually shoot on women wearing prosthetic bellies, and not actual pregnant women? The problem with this is, it just doesn’t portray the reality of pregnancy. You don’t always feel glamorous, sometimes it’s hard to find clothes that really suit you especially when you’re heavily pregnant. Dear fashion brands, please show us what pregnancy fashion really looks like or real pregnant women so that we can see ourselves reflected, and so that the clothes actually give an idea of how we can expect to look or feel.
More Multi-Functional Products
When you become a mom, your time is precious, there’s always something that has to be done, and very often that means you won’t have time for multiple layers of products before you put on makeup. As a busy mom, you might have to kiss goodbye the elaborate eyeshadow styles with different colors and shading in different areas. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with makeup, it just means we need products that can do more than one thing. An eyeshadow palette and brush that comes preset with different colors, a foundation that also primes the face, and any other multi-tasking products that gives us back time. Take for example this organic skin repair cream, it’s moisturizes, repairs, smoothes skin and is natural. It’s a product that we can apply once and know that many skincare needs are dealt with.
Keep Things Fun
Just because we have kids doesn’t mean we want super matronly and serious clothes and beauty. I don’t know about other moms, but I think it’s important for my kids to see that I’m still easy going and fun. Fashion is one way I express that, and if it becomes too dull and boring, that just isn’t an accurate representation of me and who I am. Give moms options to still have fun with their clothing and makeup, trust me you’ll make so many of us happy. We can still be fun, wear comfortable clothes that are stylish, we shouldn’t have to choose one or the other.
More and more women are having children after 30, and this coincides with the busiest time in their careers and lives. That means there are a lot of busy moms out there who are often frustrated by how the beauty and fashion industries cater to them. From super limiting fashion choices, to clothes that wouldn’t realistically work, to beauty routines that are just too long and elaborate to fit into our daily lives, things have to change. All the brands need to do is pay more attention to us and our needs, hear what we’re looking for and work with us to create it. Many moms would be grateful for this.
