I know immediately that I am going to enjoy every single second of my holiday. AsI gaze at the natural structure that blends with the surrounding environment, I know that I have chosen one of the best eco friendly hotels in Sri Lanka. This will be my home away from home, for the next week or so.
Eco friendly accommodation
This has to be the most important step. With a little research you will be able to find some wonderful eco-friendly accommodation options, in the destination of your choice. I was visiting Sri Lanka and did my research. I was thrilled with my choice. Today, more and more hotels and other accommodation providers have switched to a more environment friendly approach, so you have more options to choose from. The best thing now is that you do not have to compromise on comfort to be eco-friendly. You can enjoy the best of both worlds; a great holiday and a clear conscience.
I flew to Sri Lanka and then took a car to my hotel. But, once there I made a point of walking or cycling as much as possible, to help reduce my carbon footprint. That is why I love choosing hotels that are in scenic locations. This inspires me to spend time walking and exploring or to cycle through small villages along shady gravel pathways. Personally, for me these activities are a great way to unwind and relax completely, especially as I know I am not harming the local surroundings.
Respect the local environment
Develop a mindset to respect your local environment. Even while on holiday there are little steps you can take that will go a long way towards conserving the environment. When you go out walking or exploring always be mindful of your surroundings and avoid feeding animals and picking or breaking any plants and flowers. You have taken the right step in selecting an eco-friendly hotel. Next you can do things such as reusing your bed linen and towels. Also, be mind ful of your water usage and opt for an invigorating shower instead of a bath.Unless of course you have done a massive hike, your muscles are sore, and this is your first proper soak you’ve been saving up to have while on holiday. In that case, go ahead and indulge!
A successful eco-friendly holiday
I stayed at the Gal Oya Lodge which is a location that epitomizes serenity. As far as eco-friendly hotels in Sri Lanka go, this place is perfect. It is a place of quiet wilderness, spread across 20 acres of private jungle. I spent hours exploring the jungle area and enjoyed responsible safaris to the quiet Gal Oya national park, where I saw my fill of wild elephants frolicking and some water buffalo as well. I have heard that the park is also home to axis and sambar deer as well as the elusive Sri Lankan leopard. Already on my bucket list is a visit back here to catch a glimpse of a leopard and capture the perfect shot. Tell me, what is on your travel bucket list?
